SITA UK Case Study: Graduate Assessment
Industry sector: Recycling & Waste Management
Number of employees: 5,000+
The company had run its own graduate recruitment process in 2005 which had been designed, managed and delivered internally. With a great many applications received for the 2006 graduate recruitment process, SITA UK needed to ensure that a robust and objective assessment centre process was in place which would isolate the most suited graduates for the roles in question. The project was to start in September 2006 to ensure that the graduates recruited for January 2007 were of the required quality.
Following an initial meeting and after having sent a proposal which outlined a cost-effective solution, SITA engaged a&dc, a specialist HR Consultancy with over 20 years’ experience in designing and delivering Graduate Assessment Processes.
With dates for the first Assessment Centre already fixed, a&dc were set a challenge of selecting and tailoring suitable Off-the-Shelf Exercises to reflect SITA UK’s competencies and graduates’ likely tasks and challenges.
a&dc’s began by conducting detailed job analysis interviews with Operational Directors in order to identify which competencies were essential to graduate roles within the organisation. Next, the project team went on to tailor five off-the-shelf Assessment Centre Exercises from the AC-EXS range that would effectively assess these competencies as well as accurately reflecting working life at SITA UK. Each competency would be assessed 3 times to ensure that decisions were made fairly and with ample data.
The a&dc team tailored 2 group discussion exercises an external interview simulation, a scheduling exercise and an analysis exercise. In certain cases, the difficulty level of the preferred off-the-shelf Exercises had to be altered in order to better reflect the skills and experience of the Participants.
Simultaneously, a review of existing numerical and verbal tests suitable for graduates was undertaken by a&dc to ensure all assessment tools conformed to best practice standards.
a&dc completed the design of the Graduate Assessment Centre and supported the implementation of the new Centre by training internal Senior Directors as Assessors. In addition SITA’s Regional HR Manager was invited to shadow the Centre Manager on the actual Centre in order for SITA to run future Assessment Centre events independently.
SITA UK & a&dc rolled out the first Graduate Assessment Process in September 2006 within budget and on deadline.
In addition the Assessment Centre successfully identified the desired number of competent graduates to join the company. The graduates who were offered positions at SITA began work in January 2007 and have exceeded all expectations so far.
a&dc continue to support SITA UK in their Graduate Assessment Process and its wider people strategy.
What the client says
“Working with a new business partner and establishing a base relationship can often be a difficult and testing time for all concerned, especially when the deadlines are tight and it is a new knowledge area for the business. The waste sector was a new field for a&dc Ltd but they took care to listen to us and to ensure they understood our business needs and culture from the start. We have been working with a&dc Ltd for over twelve months, during this time we have received excellent customer service and have recently confirmed a second year contract to deliver the resources for our 2008 graduate program”.
